This is partly because on my first-ever sea kayak trip, we had to carry our gear from the beach a couple hundred yards up a hill to the campground. That first time, I used a real Duluth pack, but it is too bulky to stow in smaller kayaks. I sometimes also carry ropes and pulleys for hoisting our food into the trees in that same Duluth pack.
