The paddle is attached to the boat with its tether. I activate the VHF with my teeth while checking my position on the GPS with my little toe. I use natural flares that I light with my BIC as they surface. (be careful not to fire them up wind or they drift back down on you. Also be careful not to fire to aggressively.) If I make a mistake I wipe myself with the spray skirt I don't need. I use the biodegradable kind. Be sure to zip up before you re-enter the boat. You could get your bottle filler caught in a deck bungee.
