>> Do those zip lock sliders actually work in real conditions with sand etc.? Do the roll up models with velcro stay closed well enough? Are there designs I can make myself (which I prefer to do) that someone out there knows about? I haven't seen this debated this winter, I'd sure appreciate some healthy discussion on the matter. Brian W. in snowy Corvallis, Oregon. (1" of snow just about shut this town down) >> For the last three years I have been used a SealLine clear vinyl map case that I bought at REI (I just checked, and it's NOT in their online catalog). The case has a zipper-type closure, but without a zipper pull, so it fastens like a big Zip-Loc. So far it has remained watertight, even through several rolls in succession. The case has corner grommets that I use to snap it to the deck lines ahead of the cockpit (I fasten it so I can flip it onto the sprayskirt). My main complaints are that after a while the case develops ripples around the edges and that toner ink from copies comes off on the vinyl, necessitating a cleanup with alcohol (which may have contributed to the ripples). Last night I bought some clear acetate sheeting to insert into the case to try to alleviate the second problem. I used to have a vinyl map case that had a zipper pull, but the zipper pull caused a gap that let water in. The new case is much better. I also use a grease pencil (china marker) to write on the outside of it. I piece of toilet paper or a soft cloth works great to clean it back up. I like the idea of using a document protector to stop ink from sticking to the inside. On another note, I believe Eastern Mountain Sports either carries or used to carry the Ortlieb products.
