Paddling along through fog so thick that only one's thoughts are
visible, your reverie is abruptly shattered by the ancient cry of a
great
blue heron as she lifts uncertainly from the brilliant blue of a
mussel-shell beach witnessed only by the brooding, wet spruce....your
passage home seems as much back through time as it does through space.

I guess the only problem I have with Ms. Jason being in the hall of fame is that
she did it with relatively poor preparation and isn't the model of a responsible
paddler. For example, no PFD until well into the voyage (third year I think).
She followed a dream and survived because she's basically a smart and
capable woman (certainly smarter and more capable than her first year
companion, Don Starkell). She learned as she went along and ultimately
succeeded. But I don't think we should judge her just on the final results.

Her book is entertaining reading and I envy her in many ways. I have a
sort of infatuation with the Arctic and wish I could do similar (no doubt
attributable to the 0.00001% Inuit blood in me [12 generations back]).

My two cents.
Mike

PS this is my second "negative" post in a while. I hope folks don't get
the wrong idea about me.

Oh Oh no PFD! Think of all those thousand of paddlers for the past four
thousand year.

This is my tenth smart A## "negative" post this year. Your right!
