If a digital record is
desirable you can now do it yourself at home with a desktop film scanner
(not the same thing as a print scanner). The HP Photo Scanner, as an
example, produces 2400 dpi by 30 bit color density -- a very high
quality scan, and is the size of a thick book.

HP has just announced a new version of the PhotoSmart slide and negative
scanner. Reportedly it has better noise immunity than the old one, and
scans at 36-bits. Also, the driver interface is much improved, and more
oriented toward the advanced amateur and professional than formerly. It
is supposed to be priced at $500, but I don't know if this is the list
price or street price. It uses the same chassis as the old one. I bought
the old one on sale for $300 and have generally been pleased with it,
though I do have a problem with noise -- which appears as speckle -- at
maximum resolution. Those who have color printers (I'm still waiting for
the new Epsons) say the noise is rarely evident in prints, however.
