The bag-size discussion has reminded me of a memorable kayak trip when I
packed one of my midsize Hollowfill bags into a nice big dry bag which
wouldn't fit in the boat, even in the cockpit. It sat bungied to my rear deck
for the whole trip, like a giagantic yellow weather balloon. No way at all to
look cool on that trip! Live and learn. Small bags now.

I do have a question. Where can one get good compression bags at a reasonable
price? I have only one but I'd like another. - Bill

Your request reminds me of the time I walked into Paragon Sporting
Goods, one of our quite upscale outdoor type shop. I spotted a barrel
full of compression stuff sacks, name brand stuff. No prices. I asked
a clerk and he said "Oh the smaller one are a dollar, the bigger one two
dollars." I knew they were really supposed to be priced at $15 to $25.
Imagine my glee. I didn't want to be greedy and buy the entire barrel,
so I picked up just four or five. Needless to say, I have compression
bags to last a lifetime.

Bill,
Check out REI's outlet web page ( don't know the URL off the top of my head,
but you can get there from www.rei.com ) They have close-out pricing on
Granite Gear compression bags, listed strangely under Camping and Hiking -
sleeping pads category. Granite Gear is a reputable manuf. of back packs and
portage packs.

If you want a compression dry bag, there are several. The one I use is a
Cascade Designs Black Canyon 20 litre. It has the same valve as the
Kodiak tapers and two compression straps. It's made of the waterproof
Cordura stuff that's pretty tough. I haven't had the chance to submerge it
to test it, but it seems up to the standards of other Cascade Designs
dry bags.

There was a review of compression dry bags in Canoe and Kayak last
year sometime. Check in a library for more info (or maybe the C&K
website)

Mike
