Thanks to all for your input - do you have any suggustions for a particular
brand? I've decided to get an off shore type with greater buoyancy but the
price ranges in the West catalog are pretty extreme - from $70 to over
$150 - any other sources? I noticed that some of them have harnesses, which
apparantly means a few sewn in metal rings to be attached to safety lines.
Are those just for sailors or what. Someone esle mentioned a shorty to not
interfere with the skirt. - Any brand in particular?
TIA
Alice

Every brand that I have seen (West Marine, Cabellas, etc.) is
manufactured by Stearns, with a Halkey-Roberts inflation device. (Is
there any exception to this?) I don't think that the brand matters, so
long as the manufacturer is reputable. I agree with the advice regarding
the shorty--it makes it possible to wear it with a small fanny pack
(worn as a belly pack). These inflatables are great--they make it
possible to wear warmer immersion gear without overheating. (As others
have mentioned, however, I still use a foam PFD in whitewater.)

What do they call a single-handed sailor way offshore wearing a pfd?

An optimist!
