This tape was made on Tuesday, Feb 23, at noon. website is http://www.AudubonNaturalist.org. Gulls generated much of the excitement again this week, especially the bird on the Patuxent River, in St Mary's Co, MD, that is believed to be an adult KELP GULL. This bird, a species native to the southern hemisphere, was first reported on Feb 14 and was seen every day this week, attracting hundreds of birders from a variety of states. The most recent report was for Tuesday morning, Feb 23. The bird has been sitting, flying, and feeding behind two restaurants, the Sandgates Inn and the Seabreeze, in the town of Sandgates, southeast of Mechanicsville [DeLorme Pg 30, B2]. It was observed from dawn to dusk most days, but, on at least one day, it was seen flying off in mid- to late-afternoon. >From the Washington Beltway, take Md Rt 5 south. About 20 miles south of Waldorf, Rt 5 becomes Rt 235. Continue south on 235 about 4-1/2 miles, then turn left (east) on Md Rt 472 (Sandgates Road). In about 2-1/2 miles you will reach the river and the restaurants. Use caution on the pier, which may be icy. -----Original Message----- Somewhere in St. Mary's County in southeastern Maryland --- where I work --- there is one stray kelp gull that, apparently, has strayed ever so slightly from its normal domain of South America and South Africa. I know this isn't exactly a paddling issue --- and please, Ralph, don't try to save it with the baby worms! --- but does anybody know anything more about this story? Or about kelp gulls. (A direct response is probably best) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Mon Mar 01 1999 - 12:29:29 PST
