>>A canoe puts you too high up, even if kneeling, for effective paddling >against wind. I have been in a situation with me in a K-Light alongside >AMC canoe instructor/leaders in their canoes while paddling into 20 knot >winds. They were stymied while I just doddled or paddled leisurely >circles around them in order to stay back with them. That high freeboard really doesn't help. On some solo trips in a tandem boat I've sometimes moved to the front seat. The canoe weathervanes behind me so I'm not spending all my time & energy on keeping the thing going straight. > >>Am I the only paddler who tethers his hat? >no. mine is also tied to my head. i'm trolling to see what hats folks like >to use when it's windy... i don't like lines around my head, so i think that >stocking style hats are a better choice...they are easier to store in a bag >too. I like a broad-brimmed hat because it keeps the glare down. Some of the outdoor stores around here sell a gizmo consisting of 8-10 inches of nylon ribbon with a clip on either end. One for the hat, the other for your collar. The hat might blow off but it doesn't go away. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Wed Mar 10 1999 - 19:47:56 PST
