This seems rather high. A couple of years ago I shipped a kayak from San Diego to New Hampshire for $92.00. It came in on CF Freightways. Are you paying packing/crating charges or was the $279.00 strictly a shipping charge? If so, I'd shop around. You can also save considerably if you agree to pick it up at your closest freight terminal rather than have them deliver it to your door. Good luck.
