[Paddlewise] VHF

I've lost the original note from the person who wanted info on VHF radios. I
saved several of the posts from the recent thread, and can send them privately
if that person will e-mail me.

After reading the last thread here and doing a little reading and meditating,
I decided on the Apelco 520. I felt that I'd need a (potentially) submersible
radio, and the price of the Standard put me off a little.

I've only had my Apelco for a month or so, but at this early stage it's all I
want from a handheld marine radio. The rechargable battery pack is plenty for
my uses around here. When I take some longer trips this summer, my plan is to
use the rechargable NiCad pack first, then switch to the AAA pack if needed. I
have rechargable AAA batteries and a solar battery charger (available from
Campmor), so the landfill problem won't be too severe.

The biggest potential disadvantage of the AAA pack is that, unlike the NiCad
pack, it's only "splashproof" (whatever that means) and not submersible. Thus
there's a very small chance that I could spoil the AAA pack if I dumped in
salt water. Guess I'll just have to listen to the weather reports on my VHS
before I set out, and stay ashore rather than go storm kayaking. - Bill
