Looks like it's less >than a 20-mile paddle at one point. I don't think the ferries run in May. It's possible to paddle Isle Royale in May, but it can be cold, stormy, and especially buggy. A few people have paddled over from the Minnesota side, but it's not commonly done, partly due to the cold water and exposure. Ferries run from both the Michigan and Minnesota sides starting in late April. There's a lot of good information on the net about Isle Royale. I don't have a URL handy right at this instant, but a quick search engine run on the name will turn up lots.
