i agree. been there/done that.
windy. me going nowhere in solo canoe. friend going easily in kayak... i
bought a kayak shorly thereafter...but for fun, i still like to paddle the
canoe in moderate wind.

no. mine is also tied to my head. i'm trolling to see what hats folks like
to use when it's windy... i don't like lines around my head, so i think that
stocking style hats are a better choice...they are easier to store in a bag
too.

I use a hat that Flats Fisherman use for Fly fishing. It has a longer bill
and a short flap to protect the neck and ears with a cord that goes under
the chin. You can roll with it and it stays in place, plus the chin strap
helps your sunglasses stay on your face by the pressure it applies to
them. Besides I look cool in it.

For just wind and cold I like a stocking or Navy watch cap.
For just sun protection I like a very big straw hat.

For rain it is the Sou'wester, every time.

That high freeboard really doesn't help. On some solo trips in a
tandem boat I've sometimes moved to the front seat. The canoe weathervanes
behind me so I'm not spending all my time & energy on keeping the thing
going straight.

I like a broad-brimmed hat because it keeps the glare down. Some of
the outdoor stores around here sell a gizmo consisting of 8-10 inches of
nylon ribbon with a clip on either end. One for the hat, the other for your
collar. The hat might blow off but it doesn't go away.

No, no, no. For all the above, ya gotta know that Tilley hats rule. AND they
stay on in the wind so you don't need a leash. Besides, I like the story
about the guy who retrieved his after the elephant ate it and wore it another
20 years or whatever. :-)

I have this purple, floppy, waterproof thing made by OR that has a chin
string/strap. I wear it almost exclusively to keep the sun out of my eyes
and the rain and sun off of my neck.

Sometimes I wear a fleece hat that kinda looks like one of those knit sailor
caps. It pulls down pretty tight, but probably wouldn't survive a roll. It
didn't survive my skiing accident last month and I had to buy another one.
Yup, the new one's purple.

BTW, I recently hear or read that sun glare can contribute to cataracts.
Anyone have any information on this?
