I am planning to spend two weeks in Quetico Provincial Park this May. I
want to use my Garmin GPS12 but have not been able to find a source for
longitude/latitude way points. Because I will be doing very little
backtracking I would like to use the GPS as a forward looking
navigational device rather than a recording device. Where can I find
maps of this area that show longitude and latitude? Or is anyone
willing to share GPS way points of this area? Thanks in advance for any
assistance. Kent Van Hoesen

In my last quest, this is what I found:

http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/webglis/

a multi layered site, it took some time to get where I wanted. good
luck

and in a later quest I found this for the USA only, fairly precise
though

Ordinary topographical maps will have latitude and longitude marks on the
borders, and you can use dividers and parallel rule to interpolate between
ticks on the borders to get waypoint information on any identifiable
feature on the map.

Don't know the best source for Canadian topos, but I bet someone on the
list does.

You can enter waypoints into a Garmin 12 without knowing latitude and
longitude. The Canadian topos that I use on my paddling trips in
northern Canada all have UTM grids. I suspect that the same is true for
Canadian topos in the Quetico area. If you are entering waypoints
manually, it is actually easier to do so using the UTM format, since the
grid is symmetric, and of constant size. (Depending on the map scale,
the grid will be shown in either 10-kilometer or 1-kilometer squares.)
This makes it very easy to identify the UTM coordinates for any point on
the map. The UTM coordinates can then be entered into the Garmin 12
(simply set the position format to UTM in the navigation setup page).
An even easier approach is to mark the waypoints on your map, scan the
maps into your computer using a flatbed scanner, and then use software
such as Ozi Explorer or Fugawi (both of which work very well) to
calibrate the map and enter the waypoints into your Garmin (by
double-clicking on the marked waypoints, and typing in a name).

I can't help you with the waypoints, but I have a few suggestions.
First, instead of lat/long, use UTM coordinates instead. Those are those
little blue tick marks on the edge of a topo map. Those distances are in
meters and of a fixed length so they are far more convenient to enter into
your receiver. There is also some shareware available to transfer data
between your receiver and your computer. Here in NJ, EMS has cables to
connect the two.
Also, Magellan has a GPS Topo-Guide which has lots of info, plus
some overlay cards that you can line up on your topo sheet and read off the
UTM coordinates directly. $15 or so.
When you do find your points remember always to plot your route, not
just the destinations. It's no fun in late evening to discover that you now
have to paddle across an island to get to your campsite!
