Never shipped anything before, excepting fedex, ups et. al..

How does one ship a kayak? Any recommendations as far as trucking companies?
I called one and they quoted $279.00 to get from VA to MA, is this right,
or did they sense my gullibility?

thanks
jim

Can't tell you much, but I had a canoe shipped from the factory in
Florida to me in NJ last summer. Cost me $60 shipping. Boat was wrapped in
cardboard sheeting, strapped with plastic binder, and labeled as "Top
Shipment Only" meaning don't pile other things on top of it.

This seems rather high. A couple of years ago I shipped a kayak from San
Diego to New Hampshire for $92.00. It came in on CF Freightways.
Are you paying packing/crating charges or was the $279.00 strictly a
shipping charge? If so, I'd shop around. You can also save considerably if
you agree to pick it up at your closest freight terminal rather than have
them deliver it to your door.
Good luck. You'll hold your breath the whole time it's en route.
Dennis
