Maybe for the same reason that people buy cars that can go 150 mph.
There is the 'cool' factor and the idea that "I might do that someday".

I agree with this, another reason why I like the Greenland style paddle,
easy to store and transport even without taking it apart.

AH, but that puts you into the other class of people who buy a folding
boat and use it to fly off far flung places to paddle.

The big disadvantage of a hard boat is the problem of transporting it
long distances.

BTW When I did have a car that would go 130+ mph, I used it to go that
fast. Racing is fun, but expensive. :-)(

How about flying with a full length paddle?  The take-apart can be carry-on.
