Paddles make excellent poles. I also have 2 Eureka nesting 8 ft. poles, purchased from Campmor. I have two tarps that I use when kayak camping. One is a Cooks Custom Sewing 12x12 Clif Jacobson, wildly colored tarp. The second is a Cooks Custom Sewing 10x10 ultralight all blue tarp that will pack down into a quart container. I added some Kelty reflective cord, after seeing the stuff in action. Clif Jacobson has a method of pitching a tarp that I think works well. Basically you tie a rope between two uprights and tie the tarp to the rope. Its a versatile method. See Clif's canoe camping books for a detailed description.
