Subject: [Paddlewise] UTM What makes UTM so easy to use is that you don't need to buy agrid for it or any other hardware. Each UTM grid is 1,000 meters square. It is very easy to eyeball 100 meter lines on the grid and 50 meter increments only take a little practice to master. This skill was very important when I was an Infantry Officer and leading people on 2 - 6 km "hikes" in the jungle. On the open sea, where we routinely go a lot further, I'm not sure that UTM is the way to go. It will certainly work while on lakes and rivers, but I'd prefer to go with deg, min, sec for the open ocean. Jst my 2 cents worth.
