Hi Donald - My girlfriend and I built Baidarkas last summer with Cory Freeman at Spirit Line Skin Boat School in Anacortes Washington. We built two boats and two paddles in 8 days. I reccomend taking more time, we have a business and couldn't be away any longer. Our boats are incredible, the rougher it gets, the better they handle. Cory is a master builder. (George Dyson and Chris Cunningham, the editior of Sea Kakaker Magazine recommended him. Cory only uses red and yellow cedar and the boats are totally custom to your size & shape and paddleing skills. I would not attempt it at home. I think you are wise to go to a school. After seeing all the nuances and opportunities to screw up andbuild a boat that didn't go straight or was standard instead of built exactly for you. Plus I didn't want a project hanging around for 6 months.
