Hurley must have been an extraordinary man, but apparently he was not amongst the 6 men chosen for the incredible crossing to South Georgia. Worsley, Captain of the Endurance, in his book Shackleton's Boat Journey, says, "(Shackleton) selected to accompany him: Tom Crean, H. McNeish, Timothy Macarty, J. Vincent and myself." And according to Worsley it was he, himself, who did the navigating...with great difficulty because of the overcast skies. On day 13 he says, "Since leaving Elephant Island I had only been able to get the sun four times, two of these being mere snaps or guesses through slight rifts in the clouds." Apparently it was also Worsley who guided the 28 men in three open boats safely to Elephant Island. Another remarkable man.
