Many years ago, none of the covers of Sea Kayaker ever had the pictured paddlers sporting PFDs. The same void was seen in just about all of the ads in the publication. I guess no one want to depict sea kayaking as being risky. Well someone complained vehemently in the letters to the editor and, lo and behold, on the cover of the Sea Kayaker in which the complaint appeared, depicted was a Greenland paddler, sans PFD of course; seemed to me at the time a way of tweeking the nose of the guy who was complaining. Of course, even Sea Kayaker changed with the times and so have just about all of the ads, i.e. everyone has a PFD on. Others have changed too. I remember the first time I saw Derek Hutchinson at a symposium beach he was ferverishly backpaddling away from a staff person who was wading out to him with a PFD to put on. The look on Derek's face at the time was that of Dracula when confronted by a crucifix. ralph diaz -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . .
