(Another one that didn't post.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------- Sunday, we at Bay Area Sea Kayakers had our first skills practice focused on Greenland paddle skills. Thirteen of us gathered at the beach at Pillar Pt. on Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. We introduced ourselves and then looked over the variety of paddles and boats we had to play with. Boats ranged from a Scupper to a Khatsalano sans sponsons, including two home-made skin boats, and two home-made wood strip boats by Ken Katz (gorgeous!), paddles ranged from laminates to former 2-4s to a fiberglass paddle from Italy, and paddlers ranged from novices to those who had been paddling a decade. This was an informal skill sharing session, and not a class, so Ken and I did some demos and we all got on and in the water to share skills. I was really happy to see so many folks there, and everyone got something out of the day. I could still roll after months of not practicing. Another paddler tried out a hull breathing tube, others tried sculling and rolling. We all tried out each others paddles and boats. The wind started blowing harder in the afternoon, so after a little more time on and in the cold water we packed up and headed home. It was a great opportunity for folks who had learned about Greenland paddling from written sources to meet with others and share skills face to face. The May visit of Maligiaq Padilla will be a revelation, indeed. (If you allow me to whine for a moment....I won't be able to be there... I'll be out of town :( Barbara Kossy Sea Kayak Italy http://www.seakayakitaly.com tel. 650-728-8720 fax 650-728-8753 bkossy_at_igc.org *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Fri Apr 23 1999 - 08:37:02 PDT
