I'm _quite_ surprised by the fact that in a group of experienced paddlers no one had a spare paddle. Any reason why not? One of the reasons that I'm asking is that I'm wondering how many of us get complacent about observing safety issues when paddling our "home" waters - areas that we may paddle every day and be extremely familiar with. (having been at Deception Pass several times I really can't imagine being complacent about paddling there!)
