Occasionally, the subject of accurate wind reports has come up on this list. I found this site, which has free daily wind meteograms for the previous day from dozens of sites on the east coast: http://www.windhotline.com/ The site is desgned mostly for wind-surfers (for a fee, you can get current wind conditions). But the wind sites are close to a lot of popular kayaking areas, too. Now I can say I was paddling in honest gusts to 25 knots on the Hudson yesterday evening, with seas that had been building all afternoon in gusts to 30 kts (the marine forecast, by the way, was for winds diminishing to 10 kts). Not Tsunami Ranger stuff, but pretty wild, anyway. Definitely some waves that were over eye level (i.e., above the horizon) -- maybe three feet. My Guillemot and I had no trouble staying breathing side up, and for a few moments there I had that sublime feeling of being at perfect oneness with my boat and the seas, bobbing over the waves with a relaxed stroke and hearing the symphony of wave crests surrounding me. Now if only there were accurate wave height information for the Hudson on the net . . . Happy paddling-- Professor Karl S.
