The new fittings will hold up just fine.  By what I mean by "new" are
the ones introduced around 1989 or 1990 on the Classic and slightly
earlier on the Expedition (with the Aerius model approaching its 50th
anniversary in a year or two, that's NEW!).  They have a flange forward
and aft that is covered by sewn on straps.  From around 1990 to 1993,
the straps were made of material similar to the deck and that was okay. 
Since then, the straps are made of nylon webbing and are better yet. 
Both styles will handle a tow line.
