[Paddlewise] kayaks on air cargo

I thinking about taking my kayak to the upcoming Skin Boat Gathering
April 23-25.

Has anyone shipped a kayak on air cargo before?  Did they handle it
well?  Or did you have to pack it inside a box heavier than the
kayak itself?

I have taken hang gliders on air cargo before. They are more than 18 feet
long, but I did not have any problem and they traveled in the same
plane I did.  Should I expect the same good experience with kayaks?
