Bill,
Despite its weight I am still interested in trying a British heavy; in
particular, the Romany 18. My primary criterion is ease of handling in
following seas, i.e., I don't care about maneuverability and quick turns,
but want to cruise down wind with minimum corrective strokes and leans.

Secondly, neutrality in beam and quartering winds. To achieve this I
believe either a skeg, sliding seat or rudder is essential. I have heard
that the skeg mechanism on the Romany is not that great.

What do you think of you Romany in these regards?

Jerry

Don't overlook the Nordkapp which meets all your requirements admirably.

Yeah Bob your Nordkapp has an improved skeg design that I don't think comes
on the Romany Explorer yet. Try a Sirius, maybe slow, but handles following
seas beautifully.
