News from Helsinki! To put it short: our club, with 14 others made a
proposal
to the City Council (or whatsoever) that the jetskis should be forbidden to
reach some coastal areas and bays around the capital. The committees (or
whatsoever) have agreed, so it is possible that during this year some eastern
and western waters around the peninsula where the capital lies will be
jetski-free...

At Midwest Mountaineering's Canoe Event and Outdoor Expo this weekend,
Linda signed us up for a group that is trying to ban jet skis from
recreational areas. One of the perks of becoming a new member was
sinking a toy jet ski in a container of water at the group's booth.

They also told us that jet skis have been banned from U.S. national
parks and lakeshores, including Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in
Lake Superior.

Yea!

There were several sea kayaks at the canoe auction Saturday morning.
The highest minimum bid was $2700 for a kevlar Solstice, which I heard
somebody did buy. The seller also had a Romany Explorer with skeg and
compass that he was asking $1700 for. Both kayaks were in excellent
shape. On the low end for fiberglass sea kayaks were a couple of
Nordkapps for $800 minimum bid. There were also several Sea Lions and
other plastic kayaks, and a skin-on-frame Greenland kayak that went
for $275. Kevlar canoes were going for as little as $500 minimum bid.

It was almost too fine a weekend to be at the Canoe Event. Saturday
and Sunday were both sunny with gentle breezes and temperatures in the
60s F. I heard that the canoe and kayak tryouts at Nokomis Lake drew
about 200 people Sunday morning.

We didn't get to many presentations, because we kept running into
people we know. I saw several Paddlewisers there, including Sarah
Ohman, Bill Newman, Don Dimond, Christine Wein, Patrick Maun, Andy
Knapp, Dana Dickson, and Paul Meyer, who says he is a lurker here
and on an unrelated list I belong to. (Introduce yourself, Paul!)

Despite the fact that it is called the Canoe Event, there were many
more presentations about sea kayaking this year than about canoeing.
The presentations I enjoyed most were by Galen Rowell, Greg Breining,
and a woman named Lena from Crossing Latitudes in Sweden. (Greg has
agreed to be a speaker at an Inland Sea Kayakers meeting sometime in
the next year.) I also heard that Sara Ohman and Bill Newman gave a
good presentation on Lake Superior kayaking routes.
