This is an urban legend that has been going around for years. I became aware of it again when the British kayaking magazine Canoeist published a version of it where it was the aircraft carrier USS Missouri. Here is the E-mail I sent to them: I have been catching up on your magazine and got a good laugh about the short piece in your May 1998 issue (page 14) but not for the expected reasons. The USS Missouri is a retired battleship (the treaty with Japan ending W.W.II was signed on her decks) not an aircraft carrier. I think you owe the U. S. Navy an apology for publishing this old fable without checking it out. I knew I had heard the story before and I found it again today at www.snopes.com/spoons/faxlore/lighthse.htm an Urban Legends website. You might want to check it out. I haven't seen about one-half the Canoeist issues since then so I hope somebody pointed this out before now and you published their letter.
