I feel my Gortex dry suit will help protect me in cold air/water (water mid 40F's and below & to 50-60F air). I feel my skimpy (pretty thin) Henderson fleece lined farmer john is adequate protection with whatever I chose to wear with it in warmer water/air (mid 50F's water/70F+ air). That leaves upper 40F's/Low 50F's water and 70F+ air, conditions (I'm guessing) I will mostly be paddling in this summer. I suspect the dry suit will be great for the water but too hot for these air conditions. I think I need something that will offer protection from moderately cold water but something I won't melt away in, meaning (I think) a lighter weight Gortex dry top. The Kokatat Goretex Lite Wave Dry Top seems to fit the bill. It is 2.1oz vs 4.4oz for the dry suit, has latex neck and wrist gaskets protected by neoprene cuffs. It also has a double tunnel for sealing with the spray skirt. I don't really understand that and don't think I really care. I'm more concerned with protection in the water than complete dryness while paddling. This top is pricey at $300US. Discussions between Dave K. & Doug L. seemed to indicate there will be some leakage in any dry top once you're in the water. I guess this makes some sense because unless you were to cinch the waist in past endurance, some water will come in that way. Hopefully this isn't enough to invalidate the dry top concept. Am I in the ball park with this direction? I don't think I want a semi-dry top and what that implies nor do I think I want a nylon type top. Comments?
