In a thread we had going last week around whether there should be government specifications on kayaks for things like bulkheads, floatation, etc. I attempted, in my clumsy way, to whale in on the side of the designer's freedom to innovate and solve problems in various ways. Well, with supporters like me, who needs detractors? I blew it big time, by suggesting a boat Matt Broze had designed had been involved in a fatality. I was working from what we might loosely call my "memory" of a description in Deep Trouble. In fact the situation I was thinking of involved a boat by another designer entirely (see the side bar on page 62 of Deep Trouble). I'm blaming it on my spending too much time in the "set-up" phase of roll practise, or something like that. I've been attempting to E-mail Matt privately to sort this out, but my messages are bouncing (server problems). Anyway, I wanted to publicly apologise to Matt for any embarrassment or distress I may have caused him. My intentions were good, but you know what Dante said about the road to Hell . . .
