A bunch of us (some sea kayakers, some canoers, some in small skiffs) plan to congregate at a campsite on Long Island, Willapa Bay, WA. All have done volunteer work on the island, which is on the USFWS Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, a huge refuge sheltering mainly migratory waterfowl. Because of demands on Refuge personnel, we volunters are now the de facto body which maintains and keeps up with the needs of the five primitive campgrounds on the island. The Feds only supply gas for chainsaws and weed eaters, toilet paper for the potties, and the "apparatus" for pumping poop. This trip is mainly recreational, in reward for the eight or so days each of us spends each year bushing out trails, picking up trash, and *pumping poop* from the pit toilets on the island. Even so, I expect there will be some brush control and trash pickery amongst the barbecued chicken, potables, and tomfoolery. Mellow and relaxed time is anticipated. Others interested in volunteering on the Refuge should contact me. So far, only locals have participated. -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Wed May 26 1999 - 21:57:37 PDT
