John is right here so I guess I better correct myself before John or
somebody else does. Hopefully they will read all the posts before hitting me
with the ruler for this gaff. The Bernoulli effect IS the cause of the large
waves behind the boat (the transverse waves). i was trying to see it as a
result of only the disturbance creating the bow wave but there is much more
to it than that.

Okay I finally got through my thick skull what John and Nick were saying.
What I said may be right for the divergent wave (from the bow) but not for
the transverse waves that are the result of the increase in speed necessary
to travel around (including under) the hull shape, creating a low pressure
area as the result of this increased speed of flow (the Bernoulli effect).
Note: the interference of the divergent and transverse wave systems is what
makes the V-shaped wake visible behind a boat. The steep ones those of us
who surf boat wakes for fun try to keep from broaching on.
Wish I could have caught that last gaff before I pushed the send button. Oh
well, just another beautiful theory shot full of holes at a young age by a
brutal gang of facts!
