G'Day from a Kiwi in Australia. Like Doug Lloyd, I have been following the
discussion on rolling, pumps etc with great interest. I agree with Doug
when he talks of different strokes for different folks. The whole rolling
debate is of only academic interest to those of us who are of the folding
kayak persuasion. Yes, I know you can roll a Khats. but if someone has
devised a demon roughwater bombproof roll for a Klepper please let the
group know immediately. That person is holding on to priceless
information! Do you deflate the sponsons first up?
Of course, the serious point is that different boats call for different
techniques. I know that in my club, NSW Seakayers, there is a natural
emphasis on hardshell matters, from deckware to emergency drills. A
folding kayak is still a thing of rarity and puzzlement.
Have any folding kayakers among the PaddleWise group practised with
paddlefloats? Are these relevant to a really stable boat such as the
expedition model Kleppers and Feathercrafts?
Again, are footpumps or even handpumps practical in a high volume boat like
a Klepper? I carry a handpump and a collapsible bucket for when things get
really desperate, but my first line of defence is an electric pump. This
thing chucks the water out faster than I can bail, and I have sponsons and
a paddle in both hands to give me stability.
And then there are the Tasmanian folks who do not carry EPIRBs, VHF radios,
mobile phones etc. because their view is that they are kayaking in remote
areas like, I guess, Washington State, Oregon, Alaska etc. and if they take
the risk, they bear the consequences. Different strokes for different
folks. Regards PeterR

Yup, and Oregon is really remote. Heck, we have to dodge arrows and
harpoons 'cause we haven't managed to get all the Indians corraled on
reservations yet! Careful of them air filled sponsons....
