Bob:

I'm not sure of it, but the hammock you've envisioned has already been
created by a company called Terrelogic. It's actually a suspended cot, based
on the port-a-ledge type design climbers use. This thing has a more rigid
frame bottom, and suspends from one or two points, and doesn't appear to
need tension to make it form up. The manufacturer says people use them with
climbing ropes and ascenders to spend time way up in the rainforest canopy.
I think it would be way cool to use one in a BC rainforest, 15 meters up
some red fir or something. Or suspended over the water. With an optional
pole it'll also pitch on the ground.

The only problem I saw in glancing at the specs is that it's only 84" long;
kinda short IMHO for a six-footer, particularly with in-sloping walls.

Check them out at http://www.terrelogic.com/. Cost was $400 or so, as I
recall. I'd love to hear from someone who's tried one out.
