Been interesting to read John and Matt's dialogue on Swede form and flow,
even if I do feel like a kid allowed to sit at the adult's table; proud to
be there but not altogether sure of what they're talking about.
Went out to do some practical "flow tests" with my Swede form hull kayak in
about one-foot whitecaps this weekend; as I remembered, the thin bow pierces
waves well on the break-out through the surf zone. Surfing back toward the
beach, the bow does have a tendency to "submarine" despite the reserve
buoyancy built-in above the usual waterline. This submarining is easily
prevented/countered by leaning toward the stern, which you're often doing
anyway while ruddering with your paddle blade as far back as possible for
maximum leverage.
I'm very pleased with the performance of my new sea-sock; despite numerous
rolls side-on to the waves (all deliberate practise rolls, I hasten to add),
flooding was minimal in the sock, with no destabilising free surface effect.
A very small amount flooded into the cockpit outside the sock, but was
easily mopped up by the small electric pump. Just call me a
belt-AND-suspenders kinda paddler.

Cheers,
Philip

It would help me understand if you said what model kayak you were paddling.
Other things being equal (which they aren't) a fishform will keep its bow up
better in steep following seas or surf. A lot of reserve buoyancy or a
lifting surface near the bow is more of a factor though.
