I am needing to ship a kayak from the midwest to the west coast. Has anybody
done this? Or anybody know a good way for individual to ship a kayak via
freight?

Thanks

I have found Yellow Freight has excellent rates. If you know someone who has
an account with a truck line you may save 50% over the "rack rate"
.

Roadway Express ships a lot of boats, including sea kayaks. They quoted
about $120 from the midwest to Utah. Make sure they "top load" the boat
and that it is very securely wrapped- especially around the cockpit and
rudder if there is one. You may get a cheaper rate if you pick it up
at their nearest truck terminal.

The guy that runs Mt Pleasant Canoe & Kayak in Maine
http://www.mtpleasantcanoe.com/ dpeckham_at_acadia.net hauls
boats all over the country. When I bought my Seward Quest from
him he picked it up in BC & delivered to me in Mass. He was
hauling a load of Sedas to deliver to a local dealer. A few weeks ago
I stopped at a kayak shop on the on the SF penninsula & the proprietor
was having a demo day the next day & he was antzy that the delivery he was
expecting would be delivered early enough to make his commitments.
The deliverer was Don Peckham of Mt Pleasant Canoe & Kayak.

If your package pickup & drop off is anything close to on his route I bet
he would carry it for a nominal fee.
