Sorry to just offer a Me, Too!, but I do want to endorse Kevin's advice, based on a decent level of both whitewater and sea touring experience. With a little shaping, you can get the pads so they provide excellent support for bracing and rolling, and not feel too tight over the long haul. Again, it's a bit like skiing: what feels too tight at first will feel just right in a while.
