yes, it is common and a easy way to make one beer get you TOTALLY drunk.
;^)  Actually I think it has to do with the cold water setting off your
equilibrium.  I have had it so bad I puked. :P

The ear plugs should help keep the water out.  I would try a neoprene hood
or beanie too.
