*** Canoeist to be tried for cursing STANDISH, Mich. (AP) - A man who let loose with a stream of profanities after falling out of a canoe goes on trial Thursday in a case that pits the right of free speech against the struggle to preserve decency in an increasingly coarse society. Timothy Joseph Boomer, a 25-year-old factory worker, is charged with violating an 1897 state law against cursing in front of women and children. The offense is punishable by 90 days in jail or a $100 fine. Boomer's lawyers have said the law is rarely enforced because prosecutors know it's unconstitutional. Many residents of rural Arenac County hope the case will help make common courtesy fashionable once more.
