Around here Douglas fir is about the same weight as pine. Pine will be fine
if you're lucky enough to find some that is pretty clear.

If you want to laminate several types of wood, or thinner pieces of the same
type, use a good 2 part epoxy. Both my greenlands are laminated 1x4s. One is
Western read cedar and the other is Douglas fir. Although a bit heavier, the
Doug fir is my favorite. Almost any clear wood will work
