i wanted briefly to share my fortune at being introduced to a wonderful human
being, and a pretty good paddler ;-) maligiaq padilla. for those that don't know,
at 16 years old, he became the greenland national kayak champion. through this
wonderful list, paddlewise, and also cpakayaker, with their fantastic delmarva
retreat's, etc, i was given the opportunity to spend some time with this wonderful
guy. i wanted to share a piece of email i sent someone offline.
--
previous to this week, the only time i have seen any type of rescue was on video.
colorado is full of whitewater paddlers, so rolling a boat is pretty common, quite
a few canoeists roll their boats, and most whitewater kayakers... can't say about
the sea kayakers... i've rolled a canoe once, long ago. now i am transitioning from
the canoe to kayaks, so i want to learn as much as i can about rescues & also some
self rescues... right now, i have the opportunity to learn from a gifted teacher.

>> I hope that you are enjoying Maligiaq's visit. He has a great sense of
>> humor and I have enjoyed working with him over the past year.

his patience is incredible. i am handicapped, and he's been working with me to get me
"back up" i've done the "t" rescue, side by side with boat, side by side with paddle,
when i blew my skirt off, i did the "cowboy scramble" and a re-enter & assisted roll.
he showed me side by side - where you pull the "victim" up by his clothing --
now the funny part, i asked "do i pull you up between the boats, or over & across?"
of course you know, it's between ... but he said across. he was laughing as he
fell back in. i'm 200 pounds & 6' tall, so i reach all the way across his hull,
used my long arms, and grabbed him, and pulled him most of the way up, on the side
he really wasn't expecting!! i realized what was up, and pulled him up between us,
and he just grinned & laughed...
--
joy h, you'd think it funny to see the skeg he tied to the boat i lent you out here.
he looked at everything i had to offer, and said it was closest to his boat!! i also
borrowed an old WW kayak for him to practice rolling, as he's training for a distance
race in canada. he said "boat doesn't track in the wind" -- seems i heard those very
words uttered before ;-)

i have taken a few good pictures too [i hope] and will get them posted to my web page
as well. and anyone who knows any other good links, please share!!

have fun folks, it's now summer [ok, winter down under, sorry ;-[
