Tom,

I have rented and paddled twice in Monterey.  It is definitely worth the
trip.  The folks at the Monterey kayak store are great, the cost is very
reasonable and you get to paddle with seals, sea lions and sea otters.
This would be my first choice.    Convince the people at the rental place
of your experience and they will most likely extend the range they allow
the boats to go.  Also, you can go on a guided paddle with a knowledgable
local which I did once and really enjoyed.  

I have also rented twice from California Canoe and Kayak in Jack London
Square in Oakland.  They can put you in the water at their store on the
Alameda Channel and you can paddle out into the bay if you want.  I believe
they also do rentals in Half Moon Bay, but I've never done that so I can't
comment here.

Both these outfits have web pages and it probably would be best to make a
reservation.

There is also an organization called BASK (Bay Area Sea Kayakers) which you
can also find on the web.  Perhaps they can be of additional help.
