Tom-
A few years ago I purchased a Hi8 expressly for my kayaking/camping
adventures. I only have 2 batteries and have never used both up even on the
10 day trips. The first year I took it on almost every trip and learned
through trial and error what shots were better than others (e.g. straight
paddling in the middle of any water gets very monotonous; shoreline paddling
is intriguing but you have to be careful the lens doesn't go from sun to
shadow). The second year I didn't take it out at all because when the
waterproof housing is on my boat, my attention in focused on the camera
rather than the journey (e.g. is the lens level, are there spots on the
lens, where is the sun in relation to the lens, am I wiggling too much when
I paddle, am I turning too fast, too slow, am I leaning the boat
unknowingly, does my paddle touch the boat at all (jarring the picture or
causing a thump), . . . So far this year I have taken it out once and got
no reasonable footage. The other thing is it takes up a lot of space on
deck and it is hard to squeeze anything else on deck with it. No charts, no
water, . . . If you are doing base camping and decide to go out for a day
trip, it has to go with you because it is too valuable to leave behind.
Bottom line for me: I enjoy having videos of the trips but I hate all the
"work" that has to go into it.
