Regarding lights protecting night vision, I use a red LED reostat-contolled flashlight called Starlight for viewing astronomy charts. At maximum, the light is bright enough to light my path at night. For chart-viewing I have to turn it down quite a bit. Being able to adjust intensity is really helpful. It is not waterproof, however, so would something like perhaps a ziplock baggie for protection...
