[Paddlewise] The very last thing I'm going to say about PFDs

Folks, I know that my quest to fit my PFD properly doesn't exactly make for
scintillating reading, but one thing I did learn from the Lotus Designs
website is how to properly fit your PFD. They recommend starting by
loosening all the straps, then tightening the waist strap at the place you
want it to go (i.e., your waist); then tighten the other side adjustments,
then the shoulders. I don't know what I had been trying to do before, but
when I followed their advice, I discovered that my PFD snugs right down
where it ought to, and it seems inclined to stay there. I'm wearing it
right now, and it's not riding up, and the waist of it is sitting at my
waist. The shoulders are also sitting on my shoulders, and not up around my
ears. I'll let you know how it acts when paddling and in the water.

You all probably know all that, but I must say that learning a new sport is
humbling; I can't tell you how many times since I started paddling less
than a year ago I've been forced to confront my own stupidity. Here's
another example: I assumed the problem was with the vest, and it seems like
much of the problem was with my inept adjustment of the vest. Live and
learn <g>.
