I second Ralph's comments on how to act. In the case of startling a sailor friend, I was paddling a bright yellow Dagger Apostle, had on a yellow PFD and was using a Werner paddle with a yellow shaft and white blades. I saw my friends from over a mile away and started directly toward them - bow to bow. When I was about 15 yards from them I realized they were not changing course at all so (discretion being the better part of valor) I bore off to pass close aboard, port to port. As I passed I remarked on the nice day and the couple nearly jumped out of their skin. They were looking dead ahead the whole time but never saw me. (The sun at my back may have had a lot to do with it-- a good thing to keep in mind.) They called me later that night to let me know how invisible I was.
