Hello everybody,

I am a newbie with an Old Town Loon 138. It does not have bulkheads. I
have ordered some kayak storage flotation bags
http://www.nrscatalog.com//product.asp?pfid=2085 and a mounting kit from
NRS. I don't anticipate any difficulty with the float bags or their
installation.

My question is, how do you secure other gear inside your kayak, like in
the cockpit area? I would like to secure my paddle float, throw bag,
and a couple small dry bags for my camera and other items I'd like
within easy reach. In the event of a capsize I don't want to see all my
stuff floating away!

Thanks,

-Bob Matter

install bulkheads. imagine the weight of a flooded boat offshore. Imagine having to continually empty your boat when learning to handle surf. I've seen this with folding boats - hassle, hassle, hassle. Sea kayak technology evolved to bulkheads ages ago why does your boat not have them? I'm curious, not judgemental here.

Some of the stuff you mention sounds bulky to store in the cockpit. Consider a combo of on deck storage, under deck and cockpit floor. take the drill to your kayak if necessary and install attachment points for shock cord. Use shock cord and netting on deck; use electricians 'p' clip shock cord and netting under cockpit deck, or glass attachment points in and use shock and netting. Between you legs is handy to store tubular items or some water, attach shock cord loops to the floor of your cockpit, using either glassed in attachment points or any lateral stiffener if you have plastic boat and it has such a stiffener to which you can attach shock cord.

you don't want everything tied so that you get tangled up if you wet exit.

I also paddle a Loon 138. I secure dry bags behind the seat by clipping
them to a strap I've passed through the bars that hold the seat. This is
good for things I don't need very often.

Just last weekend I installed a set of deck rigging on the back deck of
the boat (it came with deck rigging on the front). Having now overcome my
initial reluctance to drill holes in my boat ("But won't it sink?"), I am
thinking of installing some kind of loops on the _inside_ front deck, to
which gear bags could be clipped.

I tried keeping things I think I'll need during an ordinary paddle on the
front deck. I have a fairly decent deck bag that holds a water bottle,
lunch, a map in a see-thru pocket, and a camera if I decide to carry one.
