I am paddling a Seaward Ascente. After 1 1/2 hours my lower back tires out and becomes quite sore. I am looking for ideas on how to minimize this. This might include:
1. Adjusting the back rest/seating position
2. Adding padding
3. Paddling more often
4. More stretching/exercising.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've had my Ascente for 4 or 5 years and have finally decided that the
entire seating arrangement needs to be reconfigured (some folks find me
patient to a fault). The seat/paddlefloat cushion is a neat idea, but
doesn't really give a lot of comfort or good fit so a new minicell seat is
planned (if I can find some minicell here in Juneau). I'm removing the seat
back (too tall) and replacing it with a simple back band. Some custom thigh
pads should round things out. I'm fairly small (5'7" and 150lbs) and the
Ascente cockpit never seemed to fit quite right. Hopefully the refit will
take care of some of the similar discomfort that I've experienced also.
Will post results when the project is completed.

I had the same problem. I started doing exercises concentrating on my lower
back and found they did the trick. Don't know what the exercise is called
but what I did was lay on my stomache with my hands behind neck and raise my
head, shoulders
and chest off the floor. I did many? reps of these every day. After a
couple of weeks I had no more problems. I also found
getting out of the kayak and streching after the first hour helped. Good
luck, a sore back takes a lot of the fun out of it!
