Non-ocean paddler question: When you plan on paddling down the coast (or up the coast), how far off shore do you normally paddle? I was making the assumptions that most people would stay outside the surf, but how far out beyond the surf? When I feel like paddling offshore I usually find that 400 - 800 yards (easy swim in drysuit in 55F water) is where I end up. If conditions allow I usually find myself paddling close to shore, 25-50 yards, just because there's usually more "stuff" to look at. Multi-mile crossings can be fun, but here in the Inside Passage there aren't too many places where you can look around and not see land. For me it's always an odd feeling when that last sliver of land either fades away or appears. That whitewater adage, "If you don't think you can swim it, don't paddle it" is always there in the back of my mind.
